Canon PowerShot G1 X Review: The Point-and-Shoot Revolution

The Canon PowerShot G1 X hoodwinked the digital camera market when it was announced back in January at CES. Traditionally, no fixed lens point-and-shoot camera had ever dabbled with a large sensor before, if you exclude the very expensive Fujifilm X10. But even the X10’s 2/3 size sensor was not an unprecedented size upgrade from the 1/1.7-inch chips found in the Canon PowerShot G12, Nikon Coolpix P7100 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. Canon has raised the point-and-shoot stakes by integrating a beastly 1.5-inch CMOS sensor within the PowerShot G1 X. To put that into perspective, the G1 X’s sensor is almost as big as an APS-C sensor, which is the standard size for nearly all entry to mid-level DSLRs. That’s right, the Canon PowerShot G1 X has a sensor that’s about the same size as the Canon EOS 60D’s sensor. Continue reading: http://tchno.be/JqI2RO

sonyPOCKET POINT& SHOOT rsx100 has an apsc cropped cmos sensor LARGER THAN CANONS CROPPED SENSOR OR ONE CAN BUY SONYS BRILLIANT NEX5'S MIRRORLESS DSLRSAWESOME VIDEO& IMAGES

igetsmart says:

way to big for a point and shoot – not pocket able – I think the little Sony RX100 which comes close in image quality but has much better video features is a winner- this camera just seems to be a miss – for its size I would suggest the NEX6 or 7 or 5r and the Olympus OMD – a bit bigger better a far more versitile and have EVF's – So now this and the Nikon P7700 are a bit of flops I think – I own the old P7100 –

Charlie Pragnell says:

Great review… But the most disconcerting thing about the Canon G1X for me is that it's just so damn ugly! It looks like a Fisher Price toy. I would be embarrassed to take that out of my camera bag for fear of been mocked or even beaten up!

Rodrigo Abusleme Mason says:

AFAIK the point and shot from sigma had a DSLR size sensor… i.e. g1x not the first of its kind

LEXPIX says:

G1X starts a good trend. Hopefully Canon will up the ante with their next model with an F 2.0 lens.
