I compare 15 filters, with a range of prices from $10 to $360 – and a big variation in build quality, color cast, sharpness and vignetting – it is worth seeing some real world results before buying anything.

Thanks to B&H Photo for loaning me most of these to test. In USA please check their links. For those outside USA I include WorldWide Amazon links too (geni.us)

You should do a test with the simmod nd in a 6 stop vnd test.

This is the most significant reasoning of using the internet—guys sharing knowledge skills and ability. Thanks

Pizza Froth says:

Wouldnt shifting the white balance work for correcting color shifts in camera? Ive done this before and iys worked for me.

scrolex says:

God damn that camera is gorgeous. And I’m more of a Leica m3 Fuji design fan. Normally I don’t like the plain looking (Sony) style camera but that thing is sexy.

Patrick Jones says:

Stop the video for each of the 10 filters. Look on the right side of each frame for each filter and you will notice a color shift for each except the B+W high end and the Polar Pro Quartz line. The much touted Break Through X4 has a purple/ blue cast on the right side of the frame compared to the middle and left side of the frame.

Great review. Very helpful indeed. Many thanks for sharing.

AudioPhocus says:

Funny, the Hoya IRND did not color shift and that is made for Infrared.

Mick McMick says:

So this is what Christian Slater is up to these days.

Johannes Tan says:

Thank you Matt; very helpful review!

Thanks Matt. Superb review

Brilliant info'… and great work.. I am putting myself in your position of actually being out there.. with a stack of filters – testing each one – making notes – double checking.. swapping each one – making more notes – remembering the order of events to make your video . phew !… well done… really enjoyed.. Cheers from Dj.

Joseph Does a Thing says:

is there dust and particles on his sensor?

Really interesting and well researched video. I'm dipping my toes into using filters for landscape photography and am going to buy a 10 stop ND filter very soon. I like the 100mm format but so expensive.

Didzis Sturis says:

I got Nisi ND1000 screw on filter but now can't find it on sale if I get it accident with it.

Vladimir Ognyanov says:

Perfect video,tank you,friend!!!

Firebrand says:

Its insane that filters color shift this much — there really needs to be an Industry Standardized Color Shift & Direction value, which should be printed on these things.

Ed Lazor says:

How did you come up with f90?

nextsibling says:

Thanks for such a useful video. Would you consider doing the same for circular polarisers? I suspect you might find even greater variations between different prices and brands.

Brad B says:

You didn't cover another aspect of filter use. If you shoot in raw and have a cheap filter and correct any color cast you get in post. So you can buy a cheaper filter and still come out OK.

Floren Loreng says:

There's a dirt spot on the upper right of the photos.

Apostolos K. says:

This helped a lot! Thanks!
